Experience our world-renowned dark sky
The Rise is located within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Night Sky Reserve, a gold-rated dark sky, considered the largest dark sky reserve in the world. While The Rise is remotely positioned to practically immerse yourself in the Milky Way with minimal light pollution, you can also view the planetary system up close, or try your hand at astrophotography, with a local stargazing tour, which we’re happy to recommend.
A humbling and exhilarating place to explore
A stay at The Rise involves a short drive along the Pukaki Canal, a popular fishing spot for trout or salmon. Lake Ōhau is just a few minutes drive from the cabin, with the glistening turquoise of Lakes Pukaki, Benmore and Ruataniwha also within close proximity, each offering a scenic opportunity for swimming, boating, fishing, walking and relaxing. The Alps2Ocean Cycleway weaves its way alongside the foreshore of the canals and Lake Ōhau, a suitable trail for all skill levels. The Mackenzie region is also home to Aotearoa’s highest mountain, Aoraki / Mount Cook, the largest glacier, Haupapa / Tasman Glacier, and popular ski fields such as Ohau and around Hill, for those who want to venture a little further.
Get a taste of our local area
We’ve ensured your cabin's kitchen has all you need, so you can simply settle in for the duration of your stay, however if you’re keen to try some local dining, the Mackenzie Region has an impressive selection of cafes, bars and restaurants. The nearby township of Twizel is the best place to grab any supplies for your getaway. If you haven’t managed to claim your own catch, be sure to try some fresh, locally caught salmon.
